Use what you've got.

Tell us what's in the fridge, freezer and cupboard. We'll turn it into dinner before the spinach gives up, and list the few bits you're missing.

The phone app is nearly here.

Walk-In Menu is coming to Android and iPhone. Leave your email and we'll tell you the day it's out. One email, not a newsletter.

We only use your email for this. Ask us to delete it any time at support@walkinmenu.com. Privacy

Your kitchen

Let's see what you're working with

  1. Open a section and add what's in it.
  2. Half a bag of spinach? Tap it and say so.
  3. When you're done, press Cook with what I have, then Make recipes.

This is a pretend kitchen, stocked so you can see how it works. Clear it out when you're ready.

Share your kitchen

Send someone a link that puts everything in your kitchen into theirs, or add a kitchen someone sent you.

On by default, so your kitchen, meal plan and shopping list are still here next time. Saved only in this browser or app; turning it off deletes them.

Units

Used everywhere: recipes, the kitchen list and the shopping list. Teaspoons and tablespoons stay as they are.

Allergies & diet

Not set yet

The 14 major allergens are never used, nor are vegetarian, vegan, pescatarian, no-pork or no-alcohol needs. "Lactose intolerant" is avoided where possible and marked with a red ! when a recipe still uses dairy. A guide, not allergy advice: always check labels.

Cooking nights

Default cooking nights

Pre-selected when you plan days, dinners or an occasion. You can change them for one week in the meal plan without changing this.

Plan

Free while testing. Every feature is switched on for everyone, and nothing is charged.

Your data

No account, no cookies, no tracking. Your kitchen stays on this device, and recipes are made on it too. Nothing is charged while the app is being tested.

Keeps your kitchen, meal plan and shopping list after you close the app. Turning it off deletes them from this device.

Back up or move to another device

Saves your kitchen, meal plan, shopping list, allergy profiles, saved recipes and settings as a file you can keep or open on another device.

Importing replaces what's saved on this device with the file's contents.

Delete my saved data

Deletes everything this app has saved on this device: your kitchen, meal plan, shopping list, allergy profiles, liked and favourite recipes and settings. Nothing is stored anywhere else, so this can't be undone (export a backup first if you might want it).

Help

A quick look around the app, and the tips that appear the first time you open each page.

Put Walk-In Menu on your phone (works offline)

Adding it to your home screen installs the offline version: it opens like an app, full screen, and works with no internet. Your kitchen stays on the phone.

  • iPhone or iPad (Safari): open this page in Safari, tap the Share button (the square with an arrow), scroll down and tap Add to Home Screen, then Add.
  • Android (Chrome): tap the ⋮ menu, then Install app (or Add to Home screen), then Install. Other browsers have the same option in their menu.
  • Computer (Chrome or Edge): click the install icon at the right of the address bar, or the browser menu → Install Walk-In Menu.

Open it once while online after installing, so everything is saved for offline use.

What this is

Walk-In Menu is a tool that suggests recipes from food you say you have. It is provided as is, with no guarantee that it will be available or error-free.

Plans

  • Plans. While Walk-In Menu is being tested, every feature of Free, Plus and Pro is switched on for everyone and nothing is charged. You'll be told before any paid plans start, and you'd only pay if you chose to subscribe.
  • Meal plan uses built-in recipes. Its shopping list leaves out what your kitchen list says you have, so check your cupboards before you shop.

How recipes are made

  • Recipes are put together on your device from built-in recipe ideas and what you say you have. Nothing is sent anywhere. Quantities, timings and thawing notes are a guide, so use your own judgement.
  • Cook meat, poultry and fish until steaming hot all the way through. Thaw frozen food in the fridge, and don't refreeze food that has fully thawed unless you have cooked it first.
  • Suggestions are not allergy, medical or nutritional advice. Always check ingredient labels for allergens.
  • Allergies & diet. Recipes leave out the allergens and dietary needs you choose, and the app marks ingredients it recognises as containing them with a red !. It works from ingredient names, so it can't know what's in a particular product (for example a stock cube or sauce brand) and can't guarantee a recipe is free of an allergen. Always check labels, especially for a serious allergy.
  • Calorie and nutrient figures (fat, saturates, carbohydrate, sugars, fibre, protein and salt) are rough estimates per serving, worked out from typical ingredient amounts. They are not accurate enough for medical or diet-plan use; check product labels if you need exact figures.
  • Use-by and best-before dates are whatever you enter. The app uses them to suggest what to cook first and leaves fridge food past its use-by date out of recipes, but it does not check your food. Always follow the date and storage instructions on the pack, and do not eat food after its use-by date, even if it looks and smells fine.
  • Drink pairings are suggestions for adults aged 18 or over, and every one comes with an alcohol-free option. If you drink, please drink responsibly: see drinkaware.co.uk. Don't drink alcohol if you are pregnant, driving or taking medicines that warn against it.
  • Cooked it changes your kitchen list on this device only, using the amounts in the recipe. Herbs, spices and small amounts are left alone. Check the amounts it sets.
  • The example recipes shown before you make your own are illustrations only.

Your data

  • No account, no tracking. No cookies, analytics or advertising, and nothing is loaded from other websites, so there is no cookie banner.
  • What you type stays on the page. Your kitchen, including any use-by or best-before dates you add, is saved on this device while "Save my kitchen on this device" is on, which it is unless you turn it off. Turning it off, using "Delete my saved data", or clearing your browser data deletes it. Nothing is saved anywhere else. You can export a backup file under Settings → Your data. Your plan choice, and your herbs & spices list and whether it's switched on if you change them, are saved on the device so the app remembers them.
  • Allergies and dietary needs you choose are saved only on this device and are never sent anywhere.
  • Payments. Nothing is charged while the app is being tested, and no payment details are collected.
  • Liked and favourite recipes, the style of dish you file them under, and your default cooking nights are kept only on this device and are never sent anywhere. Remove them any time under Liked & favourites.
  • Taste profile: the recipes you mark "I like this" are kept only on this device and used, while "Learn what I like" is on, to put dishes like them first. Clear it any time under Cook → More options. Your equipment list is kept on the device too.
  • Meal plan and shopping list are saved on this device while "Save my kitchen on this device" is on (the default). The shopping list is worked out on your device.
  • Recipes are made entirely on your device; nothing is sent.
  • Please don't type personal details, such as names or health information. The app doesn't need them.

Content and images

The app uses no photographs or third-party images, and uses your device's own fonts.
